Aquaculture and Fisheries: North America

Seafood consumption in the US has been increasing steadily and the US seafood market is now the second largest in the world. When this large demand is paired with an increasing consumer awareness, it’s no wonder that ecolabels are becoming more recognized in the markets. The IMO Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries in North America certifies for a variety of standards and focuses on those most relevant to North American markets.

 

 

Marine Stewardship Council (MSC CoC)

The Marine Stewardship Council is an international non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring wild caught fish and shellfish are sourced from sustainably managed stocks. This standard is broken into two parts: Fishery and Chain of Custody (CoC). The fishery standard outlines principles and criteria for sustainable management of the fishery, while the CoC standard ensures that products sourced from an MSC-certified fishery or ASC-Aquaculture are traceable from the moment they leave the dock all the way to the consumer or wholesaler.

Naturland

Naturland is a private eco-label that is well-known in Germany. Naturland offers two standards for fish: one for sustainable wild-caught (Naturland Wildfish) and one for sustainable aquaculture (Naturland Aquaculture).

US National Organic Program (NOP)

The labelling of organic food on the US market is regulated by the National Organic Program (NOP). The national label for organic food is the USDA Seal. As aquaculture and fishery products are not included into the scope of the programme, the USDA seal may not be used for this product group. However, aquatic products may be marketed as organic if certified according to a recognised standard. The standard must be clearly indicated on the product.
