ISSC-MAP

The International Standard for Sustainable Wild Collection of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (ISSC-MAP) gives principles, criteria and indicators for management of wild collection activities and wild collected species, as well as for best practice in wild collection, processing and export and general company management.

ISSC-MAP has been published in January 2007 by the Medicinal Plant Specialist Group (MPSG) of the Species Survival Commission (SSC), IUCN – The International Conservation Union, on behalf of a Steering Group consisting of the MPSG, Bundesamt für Naturschutz (BfN), WWF Germany, and TRAFFIC. IMO’s involvement as part of the international Advisory Group has allowed us to give major contributions and inputs to the development of the standard.

With the formation of the FairWild Foundation in October 2008 it was decided that the ISSC MAP Standard Version 1.0 and the FairWild Standard Version 1.0 will be united into one standard. In August 2010 the FairWild Standard Version 2.0 was published, which unites all principles, criteria and indicators of ISSC MAP and FairWild.

In contrary to FairWild, the ISSC MAP standard is not certifiable; its creators did not foresee certification. Thus, no certificate can be issued by IMO which states “IMO has certified this company according to ISSC MAP Standard Version 1.0”. What IMO can offer is a check for compliance with the standard in a full verification process, and companies who fulfil all principles, criteria and indicators of ISSC MAP can receive a letter of verification through IMO.

The implementation of ISSC MAP can be highly recommended to companies who need guidance in best practice, but who are not planning to depict a label on the final product. It can be especially recommended in cases where protected, rare or endangered species are collected, or in cases where trade volumes are very high which might threaten the resource.
