Certification requirements

The organic plant production standard as defined in § 205.270-272 including the following summerized requirements:
  • Ingredients/processing aids: Organic ingredients must be certified according NOP (organic certification according other organic regulations are not sufficient), conventional ingredients and any synthetic ingredient/processing aid must be listed on the National List under Subpart G (§ 205.605 - 606).
  • Facility Pest Management: In an organic facility pests must be prevented by physical factors such as removal of pest habitat, food sources, and breeding areas or prevention of access to handling facilities. If necessary pests can be controlled by traps and lures repellents with substances listed in the National List. If such practices are not effective to prevent or control pests, a nonsynthetic or synthetic substance consistent with the National List may be applied.

  • Contamination: Explicit requirement that packaging material must be clean and must not pose any risk of contamination, the material must not be treated with unpermitted substances (e.g. fumigated). 

  • Residues: When residue testing detects prohibited substances at levels that are greater than 5 percent of the Environmental Protection Agency's tolerance for the specific residue detected or unavoidable residual environmental contamination, the agricultural product must not be sold, labelled, or represented as organically produced.
