Naturland Certification

IMO and Naturland are cooperating since many years for offering international operations a first class organic certification which ensures them access to all important organic markets.

Naturland is an association of organic farmers in Germany, who started many years ago to offer Naturland certification also to international operators who wanted to market their products under the popular Naturland seal.

Naturland is accredited by IOAS, the IFOAM accrediation service. As IFOAM accrediated certifier, Naturland has signed various agreements for certification acceptance with other IFOAm accredited certifiers (e.g. Soil Association, KRAV, etc.).

IMO is Naturland's main partner for all international Naturland inspections.

Certification requirements

The Naturland requirements exceed the requirements of the EU-Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 in several aspects:
  • Naturland (NL) farms must be fully converted to organic farming, i.e. all plots must be managed organically (except a small section for home consumption only), but gradual conversion is possible with a conversion plan & strict separation measures.
  • The livestock husbandry must fulfill certain clear minimum requirements.
  • On farms with annual crops, the proportion of legumes in each crop rotation is at least 20% (NL standards part B.I.7).
  • Some inputs are restricted (see Appendices 1 and 2 of NL standards). Total amount of fertilizer limited to 112 kg/N/year / fertilizer from external sources up to 40 kg/N/year) For tea & vegetables: a higher amount of fertilizer application of more than 110 kg N/ha is possible after consultation with NL.
  • Environmental pollution of the operation must be minimized.
  • Production on jungle / primary forest land is usually not permitted
Naturland is specialized in certification of smallholder producer groups. The requirements regarding the Internal Control System (ICS) were developed in close co-operation with IMO, so that a group that fulfils the IMO ICS requiremenents will also fulfil the requirements of Naturland.  Some of the above listed requirements are interpreted in an adapted way for the specific situation of organic smallholder farmers in developing countries.

Certification procedures

Operators who are interested to obtain Naturland certification through IMO inspection, should contact Naturland directly to obtain an offer for the (additional) costs of Naturland certification and for more detailed information about Naturland's services.

Operators are always certified by IMO according to the EU-Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 and additionally by Naturland according to the private Naturland standard.   Already IMO certified operators only have to pay an additional Naturland licence fee and membership fee for the addtional Naturland certification.

The operator informs IMO that he also has signed a contract with Naturland for Naturland certification and grants IMO the permission to forward the IMO inspection report to Naturland for the re-certification process.  The addtional Naturland requirements can be covered in the same IMO inspection.
