EU Regulation (EC) N° 834/2007 and (EC) N° 889/2008The European Union was the first market to have governmental legislation on organic production. Since it is still the biggest organic market, the Regulation (EC) N° 834/2007 and (EC) N° 889/2008 (former: Regulation (EEC) N° 2092/91) continues to be probably the most important organic standard for organic producers and traders world-wide.
The regulation is the legal basis for production, processing and trade of organic products in 25 countries of the European Union. Only products certified according to this regulation can be labelled as "organic". The certified and verified products can be identified with an official label of the EU. The EU-Regulation requires certification bodies to be accredited according to EN 45011 (ISO 65). IMO is accredited according to this norm by the Swiss Accreditation Service (SAS) and is certifying since many years according to Regulation (EC) N° 834/2007 and (EC) N° 889/2008 (former: Regulation (EEC) N° 2092/91) . IMO ensures that the certified products can be imported into Europe without problems. The EU-Regulation is valid for unprocessed agricultural products (crops, livestock, wild collection, aquaculture), processed organic products intended for human consumption and livestock feedstuff. The organic production requirements for the diffierent activities are described in more detail in the subsections (<<see links on left side). However some basic requirements apply to all kind of operations:
