Export / Import

Import to EU or Switzerland
For exporters and trader of EU-certified organic products basically the same rules apply as for organic processors, which can be roughly summarized  as follows:
  • only products from certified organic suppliers are sold as organic products.
  • separation of organic products from non-organic products at any time
  • prevention of any contamination of organic products
  • products must be labelled correctly for export: "organic", product, "certified by IMO SCESp 004", name of last handler of product, country of origin. Lot number if available.
  • well-kept documentation on received and sold organic products.
Addtionally exporters to the European Union must note the specific import requirements of the EU for organic products:
  • The importer in Europe must hold a valid import authorisation for each organic supplier outside the EU (i.e. the organic exporter and his suppliers), except if the country of origin is on the so-called "third country list" or "Art.11 list"  defined in the Annex to EU Regulation (EC) N° 1235/2008. For IMO certified exporters IMO assists importers to obtain this import authorisation. For more details, please see the section on import authorisation.
  • For each and every shipment of organic products, the exporter must request from IMO a "certificate of inspection" which confirms the organic quality for the respective lots (~ transaction certificate).  Please click here for more information about certificates of inspection and WorldCert, IMO's web-based programme to issue these certificates.

>>  NEW Import Regulation (EC) No. 1235/2008

End of December 2008 the European Council decided on amending the EU Regulation regarding the import of organic products. The new Import Regulation (EC) No 1235/2008 came into force on 1 January 2009, however the present procedures will fully be applied during a transitional period of approx. 3 years.

Export / Import to the American Market
Pure handler operation such as traders or exporters do not have to be inspected and certified. Actually according § 205.101 (b) such operations are excluded from certification if they do not handle the products in a physical way (repackaging, labelling etc.). However, prevention of commingling and no contact with prohibited substances must be guaranteed.

Certificates for every shipment of organic products are not requirered. However, many American importers are asking for such kind or proofs as part of their own qualitiy ensurance. Therefore IMO offers transaction certificates for NOP certified products. Please click here for more information about transaction certificates and WorldCert, IMO's online programme to issue these certificates.
