Bio SuisseBio Suisse is a Swiss organic growers association holding a standard for edible fish (trout, salmon, carp and so on). It is possible to obtain Bio Suisse approval for other aquatic species such as shrimps and mussels. However, the product has to be already subject to inspection procedures against another acknowledged standard e.g. Naturland e.V. Further, the farm definition of Bio Suisse must be met and the parallel production of non-organic and organic shrimps/mussels is not allowed. Bio Suisse stipulates a conversion period of 24 months in any case. During the first two years of certification, the products may only be approved and marketed as in conversion.
For producers outside of Switzerland it is important to know that there is no consideration of the application for approval by Bio Suisse without potential purchaser in Switzerland. The application for approval of an operation outside of Switzerland must be made formally by an importer in Switzerland. This importer must either be or be in process of becoming a Bio Suisse Bud label licence holder. The Swiss importer is charged the fees for processing the application. The annual procedure must be repeated every year. All operations approved receive a written approval statement from Bio Suisse as confirmation of conformity with Bio Suisse standards. Import into SwitzerlandIn analogy to the requirements of the Swiss Ordinance of Organic Farming the Bio Suisse insists on certificates of inspection also for imported aquatic products . The certificate of inspection will be issued on request by the certifier (e.g. Naturland e.V., Soil Association). The certificate will be directly send to the importer in Switzerland.
