Aquaculture / Fisheries
The demand for fish and shellfish products is continuing to increase worldwide and the need to protect our oceans and fish stocks for future generations is becoming more and more apparent. Consumers are recognising that their choice at the counter can influence industry practices and are demanding more reliable information on the origin and production quality of seafood products.
Certification and quality assurance
A range of sustainability and quality standards have been developed by national and private bodies to facilitate consumer decisions at the counter. The credibility of these standards is built up and maintained by sound quality systems, including independent audits and certification of each step in the supply chain from the fishery or farm to the consumer.
IMO has a team of experts working in aquaculture and fisheries to support our clients throughout the certification process. The special IMO group structure with local offices and representatives in various countries allows us to offer inspection services worldwide for the following standards:
Good Agricultural Practices (GAP): AquaGAP is a certification programme for Good Aquaculture Practices, which aims to enhance sustainability and food security in aquaculture operations. Certified products are labeled with the AquaGAP logo. GLOBALG.A.P is a well known standard for a business to business label from the retail and food service sector.
Standards for sustainable capture fisheries: Naturland “Wildfish” is a private eco-label programme for sustainable fishing that also covers ecological, social and economic factors. MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) Fishery is an independent, global, non-profit organization that holds the most popular standard for wild caught fish and shellfish based on a set of principles and criteria for sustainable fishing. Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Chain of Custody (CoC) for seafood traceability ensures that MSC labeled product consists of MSC Fishery certified aquatic products and is part of an audited supply chain which is fully traceable.
Private labels for organic aquaculture: Farmers associations have developed guidelines for organic aquaculture; among them Naturland e.V. (Germany), Bio Suisse (Switzerland), Soil Association (United Kingdom), Debio (Norway), etc.
National/ regional labels for organic aquaculture: EU Regulation (EC) No 834/ 2007, (EC) No 889/2008 and USDA National Organic Program (NOP) represent the most important organic markets for organic aquaculture.
Other standards for sustainable aquaculture:
ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) is an independent not for profit organization currently in development to manage the global standards for responsible aquaculture. First audits have been carried out according to the international standards for responsible tilapia aquaculture (ISRTA).
The Whole Foods Market Seafood Standards is an in-house industry standard.
SIGES is designed to be applicable especially to Chilean salmonid aquaculture.
