Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

FSC is an international not-for-profit membership-based organization that brings people together to find solutions to the problems created by bad forestry practices and to reward good forest management.

Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC)

The Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes (PEFC) is another certification system for forests and forest products. PEFC has its own requirements, guidelines and specific control methodology. For the certification of forests both, PEFC and FSC, have varying regional guidelines which make statements comparing the quality of each logo difficult. PEFC was born from the demand for economical certification systems which work with minimum efforts of control, random testing and regional controls instead of testing each single forest company.

Naturland

The "Naturland" association for ecological development of rural land created the first guidelines for forest management in Germany. Together with other environmental organizations (BUND, Greenpeace, Robin Wood), Naturland began a campaign to certify forests in 1996.

The "Naturland" group of forests have FSC certification as well as their own logo. World-wide, these are some of the most strict guidelines, however, their application is currently restricted to Germany.
